Epiphany

A few years ago, I watched a 10 year old boy play with a Rubik’s Cube struggling to twist and turn the cube to get all the colors to match.  If you’ve ever played with this puzzle from Hell, you know how hard it is to solve.  Suddenly, the boy paused the feverish movements of his hands and yelled out, “I figured it out”.  The cube still looked unsolved but something changed in his mind that allowed him to see the solution.  He had what we call an…

Epiphany.

It’s not an overly common word we hear or use today.  By definition, an epiphany is

  • a sudden understanding of the essential nature or meaning of something.
  • an intuitive grasp of reality through something (such as an event) usually simple and striking.
  • an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure.

Today, in the Christian calendar, January 6th, marks an official feast day that celebrates the revelation of God, who came to earth as a baby named Jesus.

It is held on the 12th day after Christmas because 12 days was the amount of time believed by the early church for the Magi (the wise men) to make the journey to Bethlehem, after hearing about the birth of Christ.

This epiphany was

  • A sudden understanding of the essential nature of Christ.
  • An intuitive grasp of the reality of God through an event that was simple and striking.
  • An illuminating discovery or realization that

God became man.

God came near.

God, as the prophets of old predicted, was now “with us”.

As the church across the world celebrates Epiphany, have you experienced yours yet?

Have you discovered the life-changing person of Christ for yourself?

Has God come near to you?

Have YOU figured it out yet?

As tradition tells us, 3 wise men heard the baby Jesus had been born and began the journey to discover for themselves what this Child meant for them.

Wise men (women and children) today… still seek Him.
